C8 Corvette Vertical Doors vs. ZLR Butterfly Doors: Which Should You Choose?

Two Kits, Two Very Different Looks

If you own a C8 Corvette and you're ready to make it impossible to ignore, you've probably already narrowed it down to two options: a Vertical Doors conversion or a ZLR Butterfly Doors kit. Both transform how your car opens and how a crowd reacts when it does — but they're mechanically different products, priced differently, and suited to slightly different owners.

Vertical Doors swing straight up on a fixed pivot, keeping the door's silhouette close to the body as it rises — the classic “Lambo door” look. ZLR Butterfly Doors open on a dual-hinge system that lifts the door up and rotates it outward and forward simultaneously, giving a more dramatic, sweeping motion.

How the Hinge Mechanisms Actually Differ

The Vertical Doors kit uses a single-pivot hinge and two gas shocks per door, bolted directly to your factory hinge mounting points — a mechanically simpler system, which is part of why it's easier to service. The ZLR Butterfly system uses a multi-link hinge assembly that controls both the vertical lift and the outward rotation, which means more moving parts and more precise alignment during install.

Clearance & Practicality

This is where most buyers actually make their decision. Vertical Doors need roughly the same swing clearance as a normal door, just upward instead of outward — good for tighter garages and street parking. Butterfly doors need clearance both above and slightly forward of the car, so if you're dealing with a low garage ceiling or tight parking situations, that's worth thinking through before you buy.

Price Comparison

Kit Starting Price
C8 Vertical Doors Kit $2,599
C8 ZLR Butterfly Doors Kit $3,749

The roughly $1,150 gap reflects the more complex hinge engineering in the butterfly system, not a quality difference — both are genuine bolt-on kits designed specifically for the C8 platform.

Which Trims Each Fits

Both kits are available across Stingray, Z06, and E-Ray trims, so trim level isn't the deciding factor here — your budget and your garage clearance are.

Our Recommendation

If your C8 is a daily driver or sees regular garage parking, Vertical Doors gives you the head-turning factor with fewer clearance considerations. If this build is going to shows, gets photographed a lot, or you simply want the most dramatic possible reveal, the ZLR Butterfly kit is worth the extra investment — it's the move people stop and film.
